Kings XI Punjab surprised Chennai Super Kings by a narrow win

Kings XI Punjab 156-8 (Mandeep Singh 56, Shaun Marsh 32, Albie Morkel 3-29) beat Chennai Super Kings 149-8 (Dwayne Bravo 30, Faf du Plessis 29, Azhar Mahmood 3-25) by 7 runs.

An opening burst by Mandeep Singh helped Kings XI Punjab to score enough runs to be defended by their bowlers as they won the match vs. Chennai Super Kings.

Mandeep Singh (Kings XI Punjab) was declared ‘Player of the match’ for his brave knock of 56 runs while opening the innings.

Kings XI Punjab scored a reasonable score of 156 runs with two wickets still in hand at the end of the scheduled 20 overs and they restricted Chennai Super Kings to 149 for the loss of 8 wickets in an absorbing encounter.

The 37th match of the Indian Premier League was held at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chepauk, Chennai. The local team, Chennai Super Kings were backed up by their home crowd in all phases of the match which was lost by them in the end.

Earlier, the stand in captain of Kings XI Punjab, David Hussey won the toss and preferred to bat on a challenging wicket. The innings was opened by the youngsters Mandeep Singh and Shaun Marsh who initiated in an attacking mode by accumulating 43 runs in the first six overs. Marsh punished Shadab Jakati for 15 runs in the 8th over with a couple of fours and a six but ran himself out on the first ball of the next over for 32 off 22 balls with one six and 4 fours.

The first wicket partnership accounted for 68 runs in 8.1 overs as Azhar Mahmood was promoted up in the batting order and he proved the decision by gathering 13 runs in the 11th over with two lofty sixes. He was unable to carry on and lost his wicket in the next over for 18 as Mandeep Singh completed his fifty on the first ball of the 15th over. The wickets kept on sliding and Mandeep Singh became the fourth victim when he was caught by Suresh Raina off Dwayne Bravo for 56 from 50 balls with one six and 5 fours.

David Miller was the only other batsman who provided some resistance by scoring 19 runs as the next six batsmen were unable to touch the double figures and they scored 156 runs for the loss of 8 wickets.

Albie Morkel was the superior bowler with three wickets, Dwayne Bravo held two as Nuwan Kulasekara got one wicket.

Chennai Super Kings started off well with Faf du Plessis and Subramaniam Badrinath as they decided to attack the rival bowlers. Badrinath sent the ball out of the fence in the first three overs twice and du Plessis geared up by dispatching a couple of sixes and a four until the end of the fourth over. the flow of runs was continued by the duo and the score was enhanced to 45 in just five overs when Faf du Plessis was caught and bowled by Azhar Mahmood for 29 off 20 balls with 2 sixes and 3 fours.

The first wicket fell at 47 runs in 5.3 overs and 15 runs later, Badrinath lost his wicket for 25 scored off 18 balls with 4 fours. The Kings XI Punjab bowlers ripped through the middle order batting of Chennai Super Kings and they were reeling at 98-6 in 14.4 overs, Dwayne Bravo was dropped initially for just one run by Shaun Marsh at long off at the bowling of Piyush Chawla, he availed the chance by playing a 30 runs quick fired innings off 21 deliveries with 2 sixes. The home team fell short off 8 runs from the target with just two wickets left in the metered 20 overs.

Azhar Mahmood was the highest wicket taker with three, Piyush Chawla held two as Praveen Kumar and David Hussey claimed one wicket each.
