The 46th match of the Indian Premier League was played at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chepauk, Chennai, on Friday, May 4, 2012.

Earlier, the captain of Chennai Super Kings, MS Dhoni won the toss and opted to bat at his home wicket with the intention to pile up a healthy total on board. They lost an early wicket of Murali Vijay at 15 runs in 2.2 overs when Suresh Raina joined in with Faf du Plessis and immediately started accelerating the score by getting 9 runs with two fours in the fourth over. Raina punished Veer Pratap Singh for 17 runs with two consecutive sixes and a four in the next over and the first fifty of the innings was attained in the sixth over.

The second wicket contributed 64 runs in 7.2 overs when Raina was gone after scoring 32 quick fired runs on 24 balls with two sixes and even fours. Dhoni came in next and joined with the smooth going du Plessis and added 30 runs together as Faf du Plessis was caught by Shikhar Dhawan in the deep off Pratap Singh for 42 from 35 deliveries with one six and two fours. Dhoni kept one end secured while adding useful runs and shared little partnerships as the wickets were at the slide from the other end.

MS Dhoni was the sixth batsman who lost his wicket when he was bowled by Daniel Christian for 34 off 28 balls with 2 fours. Dwayne Bravo remained unbeaten for 12 off 4 balls as Chennai Super Kings smashed 160 runs for the loss of six wickets in 20 overs.

Veer Pratap Singh was the main wicket taker with two as Daniel Christian, Abhishek Jhunjhunwala, Amit Mishra and Ashish Reddy claimed one wicket each.

Deccan Chargers did not have a good start either as they lost their first wicket for just 9 runs after which Cameron White associated with Shikhar Dhawan and consolidated the innings with responsibility. They collected 15 runs in the fifth over with a couple of fours from White and one from Dhawan and the first fifty was posted on board in the seventh over. White was harsh on the bowlers and sent the ball out of the ropes often as Dhawan was doing well at the other end.

The score was enhanced to 77 when Shikhar Dhawan was unluckily run out for 36 off 29 balls with 3 fours and the next wicket was lost after the addition of eight runs. Daniel Christian took guards next and the run rate was checked by the Chennai Super Kings bowlers as Cameron White scored his fifty on the second ball of the 15th over. Deccan Chargers required 47 runs from the last 18 balls as White dispatched 18 runs in the next six balls with two huge sixes and a four.

The target was reduced to 29 off the last 12 balls but White ran himself out while attempting for the second run for 77 from 53 deliveries with the assistance of two lofty sixes and 9 fours. Daniel Christian was unbeaten for 27 off 24 balls with one six and two fours as Deccan Chargers fell 11 runs short of the target with five wickets still in hand.

Chennai super Kings bowlers bowled excellently especially in the last two overs as Ben Hilfenhaus, Albie Morkal and Suresh Raina held one wicket each.
