Mandeep Singh lashed out at Deccan Chargers as Kings XI Punjab won deftly

Kings Xi Punjab 170-5 (Mandeep Singh 75, David Miller 28*, Ashish Reddy 2-39) beat Deccan Chargers 145-8 (Daniel Harris 30, Akshath Reddy 24, David Hussey 2-2) by 25 runs.

The aggressive batting by Mandeep Singh and superb over from David Hussey against Deccan Chargers crafted a superb victory for Kings XI Punjab.

Kings XI Punjab amassed 170 runs with five wickets in hand at the end of the metered 20 overs and restricted Deccan Chargers at 145 for the loss of 8 wickets.

Mandep Singh (Kings XI Punjab) was unanimously adjudged ‘Player of the match’ for his valiant knock of 75 scored off 48 balls.

The 53rd match of the Indian Premier League was played on Tuesday, May 8, 2012 at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Uppal, Hyderabad.

Earlier, the captain of Deccan Chargers, Kumar Sangakkara, won the toss and offered the batting to Kings XI Punjab. The innings was initiated by Mandeep Singh and Shaun Marsh as the first went after the bowlers in the second over by grasping 16 runs with a couple of fours and one six. Marsh kept on consolidating from the other end and the first fifty of the innings was posted in the sixth over.

The opening wicket shared 55 runs stand in 6.5 overs as Marsh was bowled by Shikhar Dhawan for 22 off 20 balls with 3 fours. Mandeep Singh kept on blossoming by securing one end, completed his fifty in the 11th over and associated 39 runs for the third wicket with the skipper, David Hussey who was gone at his personal feat of 16.

Mandeep Singh was the fourth batsman who went back to the pavilion at 130 after scoring 75 runs off 48 balls with the assistance of three huge sixes and 8 fours. David Miller added useful runs in the middle order and remained unbeaten for 28 off 18 deliveries with one six and three fours as Kings XI Punjab smashed 170 runs for the loss of five wickets.

Ashish Reddy was the highest wicket taker with two as Pratap Singh and Shikhar Dhawan claimed one wicket each.

Deccan Chargers lost an early wicket for 10 runs as Parthiv Patel joined with Daniel Harris. The first tried to accelerate the run rate and gathered 10 runs with one four and a six in the fifth over but lost his wicket on the last ball for 17. Harris became the major partner and decided to attack while dispatching boundaries quite often and accumulated 39 runs with Cameron White before he was caught by Parvinder Aawana at backward point off David Hussey for 30 off 29 balls with one six and two fours.

Deccan Chargers were reeling at 74-5 in 11.2 overs when Akshath Reddy and Abhishek Jhunjhunwala provided some resistance against the lethal bowling attack of the rival team. Jhunjhunwala hit a six in the 14th over and Reddy forced the pace by ensuring a couple of fours in the 16th over from Azhar Mahmood. They shared 43 runs partnership for the sixth wicket as Reddy became the sixth victim at 117 after contributing 24 runs off just 13 balls with one six and two fours.

The late order batsmen found it hard to negotiate with the bowling of Kings XI Punjab, managed 145 runs with two wickets left at the end of the 20th over and fell short of 25 runs in the end.

Praveen Kumar, Parvinder Awana and David Hussey were unplayable and grabbed two wickets each as Piyush Chawla held one wicket.

Points secured by both teams at the end of the 53rd match of the IPL 2012:

Kings XI Punjab  – 12 from 12 games at a net run rate of -0.309.

Deccan Chargers  –  5 from 12 games at a net run rate of -0.621.
